Videos for frisbee tragics

My recent attempts to blog about women's ultimate in Brisbane have been foiled by a combination of computer-related bad juju (which even Dan B couldn't fix), and sheer lazy-ass procrastination.

Here's something from the vault to keep us interested in the absence of any real news.

In the lead up to last year's WUGC in Vancouver, Sydney's Tattersalls club hosted the AFDA Gala Dinner - a celebration of 20 years of Australian representative ultimate, and a bon voyage to those heading off to compete in Canada.

A series of videos featuring well-known frisbee faces from around the country were put together for the event. Watch it and get a giggle out of Piers Truter trying to deny that he is a frisbee tragic:

The first few minutes of this one might make you feel better about shelling out for tickets to Canberra and/or Perth:

Also entertaining if you've ever actually had a dream about playing ultimate. Raunchy or not...

Super cool all-lady layout reel

This has to be my all-time favourite video. Ev-ver. I think it needs to be required viewing before tourneys...

Enjoy!

Welcome!

Welcome to the home of women's ultimate disc in Brisbane. This blog is for anyone who's interested in our fantastic sport, be they rank rookies or seasoned veterans of the plastic disc.

Why Ultimate?
Ultimate is an EASY, CHEAP, FUN game played with a frisbee. Ultimate is excellent for women seeking a good cardio-vascular workout and the competion of sport, mixed with the fun and comraderie of the good sportspersonship required for our non-contact and safe game. Most adults are completely new to Ultimate, making it exceptionally beginner friendly - even Queensland and Australian reps can still remember the challenges of first starting to play.

Ultimate features unlimited substitutions, making the sport suitable for people getting back into sport, or those with "sideline obligations" like bubs in prams and small toddlers.

What is Ultimate Disc?
Ultimate is a seven-a-side team sport played with a frisbee on a touch-football style field. It is non-contact and self-refereed - you play by passing the frisbee down the field amongst your team like netball, with defenders trying to intercept and knock down passes, and score by catching the frisbee in the endzone like gridiron. For more on the rules and history of the sport, visit www.whatisultimate.com or www.afda.com for the Australian players home page.

Where is Ultimate played in Brisbane?
Brisbane has a special Women's Ultimate Frisbee League on Tuesday nights at Oakman Park, Toowong. We're usually there from 7pm-9.00pm. Men's Ultimate is played on Thursday nights at Annerley, and Mixed Ultimate is on at Yeronga on Monday's and UQ St Lucia on Wednesday. Ultimate is also played in a dozen cities around Australia, and in over 80 countries worldwide.

How do I join in?
In Brisbane we are really keen to get more women playing Ultimate - so you'll be really welcome to our Tuesday night sessions. We usually run 10-12 week seasons with a few weeks of 'Learn to Play', and then form teams to play games for the remainder. But new people can join in at any time.
Women can also play in the Mixed Leagues at Annerley and UQ St Lucia.

What about tournaments?
Tournaments, which are usually held over a weekend, are held across Australia all year round. They're a great way to improve you game and have a great weekend away. Check out the national tournament calendar for other events www.afda.com
