Women's League is On - New Players Welcome

Where: Oakman Park, Toowong (corner Moggill Road and Union St)
When: Tuesday Nights, 7pm-9pm

WUFL, the Brisbane Women's Ultimate Frisbee League, is a great way for ladies to get into Ultimate Frisbee. The League supports a mixture of rank beginners having their first throw, through to state and national representatives. NEW PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME - just get in touch via email or even turn up. We'll get you on a team and playing straight away.

Ultimate is a great way to get fit and have fun. Its easy and cheap (This season is $30 for 8 weeks of play plus a grand final BBQ!) - in fact, we challenge you to find a cheaper organised team sport in Brisbane! The current season runs to late March, with a second season due to start in early May.

Join the email group for updates and news - send an email to: WUFL-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Australian Under 19 Squad Announced

Huge congratulations to Queenslanders Dominique Simpson, Sophie Stewart and Becky Hill on their selection to the Australian Under 19s Squad.

Dom, Sophie and Becky join 23 other young athletes from all over the country (well - almost. No Western Australians on the squad?) to compete in the women's division of the Australian Ultimate Championships in Adelaide this year as part of 'Southern Terra'.

Brisbane Women's Ultimate Disc is beside ourselves with glee and mother-hen-pride to see you all on such a prestigious list.

All the best at the second training camp in April, and see you at nationals, girls :-)

Black Betty: Back in 2010

Back to it...
Black Betty Squad resumed regular trainings on January 14, fresh and firing after a grand old month of holidays.

Benchmarking, anyone?
Not content to start the year by simply grinding into gear and shuffling through a regular training calendar, a host of Betties turned out for our first ever Benchmarking session at UQ's athletics track on Jan 19.

Coach Mat Ryan put us through our paces with 400m, 10m, 60m runs, vertical leap assessment and pushups, rounding off the evening with a 3km time trial. It's safe to say that no one left feeling like they didn't get their $3.40 worth of track hire fees.

Two standout performances must be mentioned:
Stella "Stellar" Foley: whose 3km run looked about as effortful as a tumble down a well-buttered slip-n-slide.
Maylin "Arms" Chuah: casually flapping her hands over the top vertical leap assessment.

What's next?
We return to Oakman Park, Moggil Rd, Toowong, on Thursday nights from 7-9pm, and training sessions remain open to all women who are interested in honing their fitness and skills. Betty squad members are of course welcome and encouraged to sign up for Women's Ultimate Frisbee League (WUFL) on Tuesday nights, starting Feb 2nd.
(Contact Colette Grgic for the down-low on WUFL colettevh@gmail.com)

Betty's little black book is full of dates: selection tournaments, training blocks and a weekend training camp are in the works, as well as Australia Day pickup with our Open-team "brothers-lovers-and-others": Firestorm.

Wanna play nationals?
Team selections for Australian Ultimate Championships (nationals) are scheduled for early-mid March. Remember that Nationals this year will be in Adelaide, (next year it's Brissie's turn to be hosts with the most.)

Who to ask...
Please get in touch with Laura or Molly via email if you have any questions about Nationals, calendar events, squad membership etc.

Stars Reaching for the Stars:

Continuing the pre-Nationals tradition of BUFF vs Sultry, the Brisbane women are taking womens Ultimate to the next level, demonstrating their committment to Women's Ultimate all year long and forging some true community in Brisbane Ultimate in the process. On Saturday May 3oth, as you should all already know, we are holding a high level womens hat game!! And it's such a great idea that the guys have copied us and are joining in the fun. So come down and play, come down and watch, come down and cheer, come down and learn from the top tier of the Brisbane Ultimate Community. Bring your doubting-Thomas friends and awaken them to Ultimates awesomeness!! I sadly will not be attending this time, as I am making my way to Newcastle for another great frisbee event, the Eastern Junior Nationals, but I encourage everyone to embrace this new level of Ultimate in Brisbane and head down to Oakman park at 1pm on Saturday May 30th for an incredible game and a post game BBQ (byo food, BBQ and gas supplied : )!!!

Hucking off overseas...

This week, BrisbaneWomensUltimate Blog pays tribute to two of Queensland ultimate’s starlets, who are, sadly, preparing to leave us for foreign climes and ever-greater heights of academic achievement.

Photo: Tam getting a block on Italy at 2007 EUC

This Monday sees one of Sultry’s fearless leaders set off for her yearly pilgrimage to Denmark. Tam Davis is heading to Copenhagen where she will play the European tournament season, inject some of her ulti-expertise into the small but blossoming Danish Frisbee scene, party it up a bit... and possibly even find a little time to unlock the mysteries of the cosmos as part of her research into dark matter.

Tamara’s extensive experience on Australian representative and club teams, European championships as well as world-reknown international tourneys in Rimini and Kaimana, of course, pales into insignificance against the name she has carved for herself since coming to Brisbane in 2008: dual record consumption of long island iced teas at the RE and Regatta. On a side note, Tamara is pioneering sports science research into injury recovery and prevention through her innovative ‘sit in the kelvinator’ method of post-game muscle treatment.

Amy “Thurbs” Thurber -- our US import who flew into this year’s nationals under the radar and took the place by storm with a swag of MVP nods from opposing teams -- also heads homeward at the end of the month where she will undertake her PhD in biochemistry.

Thurbs arrived in Brisbane two years ago an avid basketballer with all of her hamstrings, Achilles tendons, calf muscles and quadriceps intact. All that was fated to change when lucky chance intervened in her sporting aspirations: UQ Ultimate on Wednesdays turned out to be more conveniently scheduled than b-ball training and a star was born. Something obviously clicked with Amy and Frisbee, and within weeks she had been recruited to a team for the 2008 National Championships.

Amy’s natural athleticism, unstoppable D and extensive and consistent, repeated injury record have all meant that she and ultimate are a great fit. Amy has been a key member of the UQ ultimate fraternity, as well as an invaluable addition to QLD’s nationals teams, on Minx in 2008 and Sultry this year. Whether rugged up at training, hobbling along the sideline, pushing the sultry squad with her sadistic ab-workouts or cheerily admonishing us to ‘cmon ladies, suck it up!!!’ from the wing, Amy will be sorely (hahah) missed.
